Fresh scent in the air,
She stirs her bowl and his heart,
Crack, crack, they all break.

Boy cladded in bermudas, T-shirt and flip flops runs 13 km with the runners carrying the YOG torch commentary
From Ong Sze Chuan's Blog:
In yesterday's papers, it was reported that a young boy of merely age 12 ran with the torch runners just to take photographs of the torch. He was described to be a Youth Olympic Games fanatic, and despite the mud and his undesirable "running shoes", he persisted and completed a total of 13 kilometers. At the end of the relay, the runners let the boy hold the substitute torch and he was really glad to do so.
I was moved by his pure interest in the Youth Olympic Games and his perseverance. Despite wearing flip-flops and having to run in the muddy water along the pavement, he did not stop and survived till the end. At first, the reporters did not notice him. However, as the crowd differed when the runners passed by different locations, they noticed the same boy appearing in the crowd and soon started to focus on him. They found out that he has been following the runners ever since the torch was passed at a primary school. At the end of the relay, he was drenched in sweat and perspiration, but there was a proud grin on his face.
Even though I am moved by his perseverance, I feel that he should have been better well equipped. 13 kilometers is not a short distance, and by running in his slippers it would have hurt his toes badly. He should have wore running shoes the least to protect his feet against the constant running.
I admire this boy's perseverance and determination. This proves that if we want something really badly, we can achieve it despite how hard the odds are. So, to those of you working hard for the exams, Go for it !!!
The saying: When the going gets though, the though gets going.
Good Luck!

Giving up isn't actually harmful commentary
From Liu Sheng Hua's Blog:
Wonder why I make a post about this? Simple. Through greed, people would always tend to grab the most valuable things they have and hold them as tight as possible and not let other people touch them. One strong evidence to support my statement: There are rich people who have got loads of money and don't know how to spend them, yet they doesn't donate to the poor and help them. Now in this case, its not all rich people that are like that, but maybe a portion of them. If they could be considerate and gone on to think: "It wouldn't cause me to live in poor condition even if I donated the excess money", then it would very well let a lot more people be saved from hunger and starvation due to lack of money to support their family. Since its excess, it would of course give no harm to the rich person. Its not an insist that rich people have to donate to the poor, instead it shows how we can actually help out one another when we actually needed help. It would of course be generous to donate money and be recognized as a donor and a hero to the poor people.
Another example that I discovered, is in a checker's game, whereby you try to conquer the opponent's chess piece. Sometimes you just simply cannot defend your pieces, but you have to sacrifice some of your pieces to save yourself. What does this tells us? It simply tells us that through the struggle for survival, good things may have to be forfeited and have to learn to adapt to the poorer kind of environment in life. There would be difficulties and various obstacles trying to get in your way, thus we should help ourselves by overcoming it; sacrificing some of the good things we have. In a situation whereby the house is on fire, we can't be grabbing all the valuables and run away for safety. This would very well prove that its actually a necessity at times whereby difficulties are met, some good ideas or plans have to be abandoned so that we could improve by adapting to it.
In conclusion, being decisive of your own choice of your own life will shape your own future.
I feel that I have to disagree. Sometimes in life, we may face a lot of hardships but no matter what, me must persevere in order to achieve what we want. Imagine if Emily gave up and succumbed to fate that her parents disowned her. She would just be another orphan and there would be no Emily of Emerald Hill. However, she persevered and hence, she got what she wanted.

Aren't those three animals disliked by one another commentary
From Liu Sheng Hua's blog:
Hey everyone,
Look at this picture... If you can't see clearly then take a closer look. If you still can't see then go to an optician. Well... Its only a rat, resting on a cat, which is standing on a dog! When I first came across this photo upon the net, the first thing which occurred on my mind is: "I thought they would start scratching and beat each other up." But this picture would certainly prove me wrong. Look at the cat who is standing on the dog, it looks pretty fine and the rat is simply relaxing on the cat! The dog was strolling along his master and didn't really bother about the animals up his back. What does this picture brings the message to me? And of course as readers you all would be amazed at how these three different types of animals which were known to be: Dog: "Hey cat I don't like you, I'm gonna chase you now and you better run; Cat: "Rat you are so puny and tiny yet you want to steal my owner's cheese, you deserve to be my meal!" Yes. That was what we were taught when we were young, as stories filled our innocent minds with the mindset that dogs would never get along with cats and cats never with rats.
Well, as readers you may be thinking, why am I posting such a post? Am I random and just feel bored? No, not really. I felt that I learnt from this picture, as long as you don't pick up a fight with someone, the fight would not occur even if he tries to start it. Let's state another example. If someone is persistent on something, like ideas he/she initiated or some point of views, we could actually not argue back about what you think his idea is wrong. The main point of my posting is to inform that accepting is part of a life skill. The dog did accept the cat as a friend, the cat accepted the rat as a friend. And now, why do many arguments and fights or disputes occur? The answer is simple. People do not accept what others may think. That's how today's society is like, with people disagreeing with one another and occasionally no one gives in to say they are at fault or confess whatever wrong which was done. Thus, being able to accept things from a different point of view and also accept other people's mistakes are of importance to avoid disputes and arguments. If animals could do it, why not the intelligent humans? Are we simply too intelligent that we live our own ways? No, its the matter whether you want to accept or not.
This post reminds me of how Emily and Suzie, despite diskliking and despising one another in the start, they grow to live with one another, from pretentious attitude to real warmth and i believe that all of us can learn from Emily, to learn to live with someone and even like that person we often claim we dislike

Women in the olden days-reference to Emily of Emerald Hill Commentary
From Yan Peng's Blog:
After reading Emily of Emerald Hill. I found out that in the olden days, it is very male-dominated. Men had the most power and women were nothing. women are expected to look after the family, take care of the family and basically do whatever the men what them to do. In Emily of Emerald Hill(EEH), Doris was scolded for reading and her mother told her that "when you get married you must know how to cook and look after your family". It was the roles of women.
In the olden days, every family wanted a male child instead of a female child. This is especially so in rural areas where parents had little or no education. The male child could help the family in farming and supporting the family where the female child were seen as useless. The rural families are also bigger compared to the families in urban areas.
Women in the past have extremely low status, even in the 21st century, some women were not treated with respect especially in Pakistan. In the rural areas, women are like slaves subject to drudgery. They are there just to obey their fathers, brothers and husbands. They do not have the right to decide about themselves because women are considered as foolish creatures according to the dominant social and cultural norms of Pakistan. Likewise marriage is also a sort of trade between different families both in the rural and urban areas. They are highly vulnerable to violation of their rights to life. A woman's right to liberty is restricted in the name of modesty, protection and prevention of immoral activity.
In todays time, situation are generally much better. We should treat everyone equally with respect.
I felt that Yan Peng put a lot of effort into writing this blog post. He does think from the women's point of view and it makes me realize that for those of us who are male, we are fortunate. But in the past, women had to endure hardships. The chauvinistic world that they used to live in. Now, everything is about gender equality.
However, why can women cut their hair short and wear pants but males cannot have long hair or wear dresses?

Being a Parent - In reference to Emily of Emerald Hill Commentary
From Marcus Lau's Blog.
After reading the book "Emily of Emerald Hill", i have understood that being a parent is one of the toughest jobs in the world. Many times, what the parents want their child to do and what the child wants to do are very different, and therefore, to please everyone in the family is very difficult.
The parent obviously wants their child to excel in whatever they do, and it is very common for them to force their child into completing what they could not accomplished. I have heard many parents forcing their children into learning Piano, or any sport like swimming. These parents probably wanted to learn a musical instrument or take part in such sports, however they never had the chance to do so in their lifetime. Therefore they feel that their children should be the ones accomplishing their dreams, however they do not understand that their child may not share the same dreams as them, and thus will not enjoy what their parents force them to do.
The parent also wants the child to be the best, especially in studies. This is most obvious in Singaporean parents. I feel that the Singaporean education system focuses too much on grades and tests. To me, an education should be more focused on preparing the student for life in the future, preparing them for the hardships in working life. That may come out in another blog post. Singaporean parents always want their child to be studying all the time, and rarely do they allow them to be independent in their studies. They will watch the child like a hawk, and how do you think the child will feel about this? Maybe this kind of approach is needed when they are young and immature, and do not understand what their priorities are. But is it really needed when a child is already 20+?
With reference to Richard, i believe that he was mature enough to make his own decisions. However, a young man like him should probably have spoken up a little bit more about his feelings about Emily's plans for his future. He always kept mum about his feelings, like when he did not want to go into Mr Chan's law firm, but he never did say anything about it until he wrote the letter.
Emily was a very insensitive parent, she did not think about Richard's feelings at all. She always thought that her plan was the best. As a parent i feel it is very important that they put themselves in the shoes of the child. Would the child like what the parent is doing? Would they enjoy it? Spend more time to get to know your child, instead of selfish reasons, try to encourage their child in pursuing their own interests, not the parent's interest.
To maintain a good parent-child relationship, we must have cooperation from both the child and the parent. The parent must be understanding and sensitive towards the child and his/her's feelings. The child must also learn to be independent and speak up when they do not like their parent's plan. The parents must therefore be understanding and do not force the child into doing what they do not enjoy.
Being a parent is not easy, being able to please both the parent and child is very hard. Therefore we must all learn to give and take, let the child enjoy his education and childhood. Seeing the child happy would also make the parent feel accomplished as a successful parent.
How are your parents?
I like how he thinks from the eyes of the parents. How they always want us to do proud Especially in EEH where Emily cared a lot for her son Richard. During the book, her parenting had actually caused her son to commit suicide. . This article was very well written and I enjoyed reading it very much.

Rainbow Death comments
From Yan Peng's poem titled Rainbow Death:
America did not foresee
Green, pink, purple and other colors death potpourri!
Expecting others to pay a high price.
Now thinking twice?
Toll on the innocent and unborn.
Omnipotent and disregarding who will mourn.
Reflective about all the illness, birth defects and prematurely dead.
All the deceit continues to spread.
Nefariously America led astray -
Generations untold WILL pay -
Execrable effects of agent orange spray!
I really like this poem as i thought that it was a different title and it really caught my attention. Indirectly, it was oxymoronic. The poem was deep and had a lot of meaning to it. I felt that it was very well written.

Walk a mile in Peranakan Shoes.
Walk a Mile in Peranakan Shoes
By Alvin Teo & Yan Peng
In this generation of technology, we lose our knowledge of what our ancestors would cherish the most, culture, skills passed down from one generation to another, secret recipes or home remedies. Whatever we seek can easy be found with a press of a button, a dial on the phone. But is this convenience necessary beneficial towards us?
The Peranakans definitely do not take the issue of culture lightly. Ask any elder in a Peranakan family, they would tell you how important culture is and all about the past. The stories they tell can never be relived, therefore, it is even more priceless.
The hierarchal, traditional family would most often, if not, definitely run by the matriarch. The matriarch, traditionally, the mother/grandmother would take care of everything. Although it was still a chauvinistic era, women ruled the matriarch ruled the household; especially the kitchen and men were only breadwinners. The competitive environment which the daughters, both blood and by marriage often have to compete with each other for the approval of their elders. To do so, one must not only possess the skills of arts and cookery, but also the wits and determination. Skills passed down are not only the knowledge of music and dance, but also beading, embroidery, painting, batik amongst other meticulous and time consuming crafts. Many days are spent teaching the daughters skills and cookery, hours in the kitchen, day and night, under the watchful supervision of the “boss”. One slight misstep may send these girls to a living hell. But doing well brings a new world of fashion, beauty and acknowledgement.
Sisters are put against each other in the fight for a spouse and friends, turned enemies because of an arranged marriage. I am sure that many of us would not be able to survive in the harsh environment.
Singapore, being a multi –racial country, used to be inhibited with many peranakan households but now, we do not see many. It is not that they have vanished, but instead, the tradition is gone. The Chinese proverb: When you consume your water, you must know its origins. Where you come from, your past, your ancestors, culture, tradition, you must not forget and instead, be thankful.
The famous saying,”walk a mile in their shoes” applies more literally than we can imagine. In this era of Italian leather and painful stilettos, can we still appreciate tradition?

The day Moses parted the black sea
I wrote a poem a while back and i thought it was good to share it with you guys :D
Is Maycomb A Good Society to Live In?
Write a poem on the Tom Robinson Trial.
(From Scout's point Of View)
The Day Moses Parted the black sea.
I heard the gavel bang.
Its was so unfair, three,
Versus one crippled man.
The truth against luck?
t'was too unfair.
Through all this muck,
I heard his heart tear.
They lived in the penthouse,
while he lived sub-basement.
He was just someone else,
another one of those Negro men.
I prayed hard to not hear,
that cutting sentence
"This man right here,
guilty,him I sentence."
